In order to obtain a first-rate handle, with no artificial filling, I select hundreds of first-rate cork pieces, and I only work the ones with few holes. I pierce them in the middle, I glue them on the blank and press them with a special tool for at least 24 hours. Then I polish them with thinner and thinner sandpaper, until I find the most suitable shape for that specific model I have in mind.
I cut it out from a single block of seasoned fine wood, and I only choose unique and beautiful quality woods.
Blond canes will match perfectly with olivetree and tiger maple, whereas for flamed ones walnut is the ultimate choice.
After the turnings, the socket will be plunged into a special resin that will stabilize the wood and make it waterproof at the same time.
This coating will enhance the natural grain of the cane.
The cup, reel ring and finishing ring are shaped in a single nickel-silver alloy bar, subsequently finely knurled and polished.
Tradition rules: ferrules are made of nickel-silver, a self-lubricating alloy which is just perfect for the rods' junctions.
This expensive metal is still used by all ferrule makers because a good alternative is yet to be found. There are two main types of junction: “Super Z” or “Super Swiss” (they are very similar) and “Step Down”.
This latter used to be mounted on the rods of all the best manufacturers and makers in history: Leonard, Payne, Orvis, Gillum, F.E. Thomas and many others.
And it's precisely this model I use for my rods, shaping the ferrules with my lathe from a solid nickel-silver bar.
The stripping guide can be made of precious agate stone or Mildrum metal.
Agate stone will be translucent and will cover a wider range of shades to match with the binding silk.
Tip tops and snake guides are always made of best quality chrome and can be black or plated according to the model.
After experimenting different kinds of yarn, my ultimate choice is the ultrathin silk which allows translucent and fine bindings, with the only exception of ferrule ones.
These tend to be made of nylon thread, for obvious robustness reasons.
The silk color may vary according to model, and the rule is every single binding has its peculiar thin contrasting lineage, perfectly matching the basic nuance.
TUBE AND SACK
Every single completed rod comes wrapped in a special cloth sack and a beautiful genuine leather tube or aluminum .
The tube can be opened and closed with a screw fastening and all these precautions will ensure that nothing bad happens to your rod while you transport it home in your car.
